To the Turks, Barbaros Hayreddin was the greatest, most feared, and most successful of the Ottoman naval warriors. He was born in 1475 in Mytilene, Lesbos, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea.

He and his brother Aruch established themselves as successful naval commanders against Christian targets after Sultan Selim (I) came to power in 1512. Hayreddin, along with the Genoese admiral Andrea Doria, faced two memorable naval encounters, and, although, under somewhat ambiguous circumstances, Hayreddin defeated the Italians both times.

He died of natural causes in 1544 and was succeeded as Kapudan Pasha by Turgut Reis (Turgut Pasha). He was the nephew of Piri Reis. Barbarossa was also called “Red Beard” and “Captain Hijri”.

Originally, he and his brother successfully joined forces with Sultan Selim (I) around 1515, but he really rose to glory under Selim’s son Suleiman the Magnificent. Barbarossa was virtually unstoppable in the Mediterranean during his Ottoman lifetime. Served first as a general commander and then as Grand Admiral (Kapudan Pasha) of the fleet between 1515 and 1544. Hayreddin was shrewd and brilliant as a young man, though prone to ridicule by his contemporaries. When he was a young man, he was famous for his impressive speaking style and was bold but prudent and strong-willed. He was born with fighting instincts and a brave demeanor.

As an adult, he became a successful Mediterranean commander due to his cleverness and speed of understanding. He took care to educate his subordinates, many of whom became admirals. He was nice, courteous to his colleagues, and thus loved by them. In private, he was cheerful, elegant, and humorous.

Once, Hayreddin Pasha publicly praised his subordinate Turgut; “Turgut is more advanced than me”. Through this, he shows his humility and nobility. Physically, he was dark-skinned, of average height, and had a massive bone and body structure. His hair, beard, eyebrows, and eyelashes were luxuriant (some reports say he was red-haired), and his eyebrows touched each other. Turgut Reis’s daughter was married to his son.

From this information, we can assume that he was married, but there are no sources that indicate the actual details. He spoke all the major Mediterranean languages such as Greek, Arabic, Spanish, Italian and French. And he loved music. Watch Urdu Subtitles
